The Detroit Autorama is a pretty big deal in the Hot Rodding community. Especially if you are a fabricator looking to make a name for yourself. A good showing at the Detroit Autorama can find you flush with new business opportunities not to mention the honors and recognition bestowed upon you by your peers is a nice boost to the ego. The most coveted award you can hope to gain at this show is the Ridler Award. To be a challenger looking to claim this award your car must debut at the Detroit Autorama, never having been shown anywhere prior to its unveiling on the floor of Cobo Hall in Detroit, MI. Out of all of the challengers, only 8 vehicles will be permitted to openly compete for the winning trophy during the main showing. This attracts big names to return year after year to show off their skill set. Every now and then some new blood will come out of nowhere to knock the old guys down a peg. If you are someone who is into witnessing the end product produced by the absolute best fabricators and painters on the planet, you want to be at the Detroit Autorama.
I'll put a few links in here from Hot Rod Magazine that explains the history of the show as well as chronicles the winners that have come and gone over the last 60 some odd years that this show has been held. Since the article cuts off at 2012 I'll also provide links to the 2013-2015 winners.
The Icon of Automotive Awards: Ridler History
50th Ridler Winner is a brand new builder 2013
JF Launier wins the 2014 Ridler Award
2015 Ridler Awarded to Chip Foose Built 1965 Impala
Update->2016 Detroit Autorama Ridler Winner is 1939 Olds Convertible
Now that brings us to 2016. I thought this year I'd try and make this little pilgrimage of mine something I could try and share a little bit of here on the internets. I was at the show yesterday and I was able to checkout Farmtruck from the Discovery Channel's Street Outlaws TV show. He was there to do a burnout and sign autographs. I didn't get to a good spot in time to catch the holeshot, but I managed to get some video of him heading by the crowd to pull into Cobo.
This next car is actually up for the Ridler Award this year. This guy made a 1962 Chevrolet Impala Nomad. This car doesn't exist... or it didn't until now.
For Jamie, a Ridler contender straight outta Australia. 1976 Ford Falcon.
For the Radical Custom category this has to be right up there. The title for the vehicle says it's a '56 Chevy. What!?
Craziest Retro Paint Job...
You woman have heard of jalopies - You heard the noise they make - Let me introduce you to my Rocket '88..
Coolest drag car.
This car is what I assume to be an unrestored "barn find" It's a Willys Gasser.
I really dig Edelbrock's '57 Nomad.
My personal choice for best Muscle C
ar. It's nothing insanely special in terms of work done to it, but sometimes you just can't beat "clean and simple".
This hot rod... oh my god. This thing was a flawless beauty.
This year's "Preservation Award" winner.
2016 Detroit Autorama Preservation Award Winner
Goin' for a family trip in a Lingenfelter supercharged Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser? Yes please.
Most batshit insane motor...
Another cool pickup.
There was no shortage of tasty traditional rods, even on the main floor. I'm in love with these early Fords.
This thing had a cool Buick Nailhead engine in it. Obviously, I dig the look as well.
This is another one I didn't find in Hot Rod Magazine's picture sets, but it's sweet.
Best tail light. lol
Well, I'll cut myself off here. I could keep going, but I'll let you guys do some digging. Like I said I put everything into Imgur galleries. Interested to see what you find from the show! Post 'em up!

Hot Rod Magazine got a pic of the Holeshot at least...

What's inside of Farmtruck...
If your not familiar with the Farmtruck I suggest you check out some of his conquests on YouTube. It's some good shit.

Down in the basement of the Detroit Autorama, you'll find Autorama Extreme. It's a show dedicated to Hot Rodding's past. Traditional Rockabilly music, traditional garage built rods & customs, pin up contests, car clubs, the whole deal. It's a show within a show and a culture within a culture. Sort of like Hot Rod Inception.
Now that I've explained a bit about what's going on. I'll take the liberty of posting a few rides. These are my personal picks for "what's cool" at this years show. At the bottom of this post I'll leave links to imgur dumps from my cellphone and from Hot Rod Magazine as well. You guys can see the whole lot for yourself. Post some of your own "best of show" pics from the event!
For me, this truck gets it. Unfortunately nobody over at Hot Rod Magazine managed to snap a picture of it, so we'll have to put up with my shitty cellphone pics.
The radiator for the motor is what you see underneath that mesh guard in the box. You'll notice when you look through the front grille on the truck, you can see directly to the motor...
